Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer is an international law firm, competing globally to attract the best lawyers, associates, partners and business services staff on the market. Prior to working with Alexander Mann Solutions (AMS), Freshfields handled all recruitment process internally through HR, using recruitment agencies to source talent.

The reliance on HR meant the company could not focus on strategic HR issues, decentralised recruitment expertise, and impacted hiring levels. In 2007, Freshfields underwent a restructuring process, seeking a reduction in recruitment costs, better value from recruitment, and acquisition of the best talent on the market. Freshfields elected to partner with AMS for provision of recruitment services.

The team immediately conducted a Resourcing Diagnostic process, reviewing the key processes, analysing key metrics, and reviewing efficiency and effectiveness. Reporting the findings to Freshfields, AMS identified areas for improvements in the recruitment process – vacancy management, job descriptions, applications, and resourcing information. 

Since then, AMS has worked with Freshfields to refine the recruitment function, and expanded the operation to attract candidates from around the globe. Direct hiring strategies have been implemented, targeting the best candidates and further developing the Freshfields employer brand.

AMS consultants placed at Freshfields provide high-touch recruitment services for all experienced staff in the UK while supporting line managers. This onsite team means recruitment agencies and candidates receive prompt and effective feedback, enabling Freshfields to capture top candidates quickly.

An applicant tracking system has been implemented, facilitating a robust recruitment process and enabling extensive management reporting. The introduction of an online recruitment system has seen a fourfold increase in candidate volumes. 

Freshfields now looks to attracting candidates in other markets, such Australia, Canada and South Africa for new talent. AMS is a global organisation and has leveraged presence in Australia to support these initiatives.
