Background
Recruitment in the banking and financial services industry is particularly competitive, as are the markets in which the bank operates. A key focus for the bank is its people – they provide a distinct point of differentiation for ANZ’s consumer and corporate brands. Naturally, recruiting the right people is critical to the ongoing success of their customer-centric businesses.

Transition and Hand-Back
Following a selection process that commenced in 2003, Alexander Mann Solutions was engaged as ANZ’s preferred recruitment provider in Australia in January 2004.
The Solution
The implemented solution, called ‘ANZ Careers’, utilised a combination of AMS staff capabilities, robust processes and Taleo technology, and operated from five geographically dispersed offices in Australia.
The primary scope of services included permanent recruitment in Australia, from entry-level (‘volume’) roles to specialist financial services hiring and some senior management-level staff.
The ANZ Careers team also provided recruitment and resourcing support in the following areas to some ANZ business units:
- Temporary/contractor recruitment (including payroll services) in Australia;
- Executive search support in Australia;
- Redeployment services and career transition support programs in Australia;
- Training support to rollout ANZ’s ‘Hiring Essentials’ training program in Australia and India;
- Providing support to conduct exit surveys, delivering continuous improvement projects, technology optimisation and psychometric testing, as needed.
The Results
To accommodate peaks and troughs in hiring demand the team size was increased and decreased as needed. This scalable solution ensured cost efficiencies remained consistent despite fluctuating business demand.
In the first year of engagement, 80% of candidates were sourced using direct channels. By the end of 2007, this proportion increased to 93% – an exceptional sourcing ratio.
Aggregate time-to-hire and cost of hire was reduced, translating into significant cost savings over the lifetime of the solution compared with third party recruitment agency fees.
Occasionally, ANZ Careers staff had been deployed to ANZ’s Asia Pacific business locations in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore and Fiji to support recruitment requirements at those locations.
In 2006, ANZ introduced an industry-leading career flexibility program, allowing part-time workers to job-share. AMS supported the execution of the program and provided ongoing support for resourcing initiatives, upgrades and re-engineering of processes. Another notable project took place in 2009, where the ANZ Careers team supported a goal set as part of ANZ’s Corporate Responsibility program to recruit over 30 staff with a disability.
One of the greatest successes of the relationship was the strong strategic alignment between the corporate cultures of the two organisations. The AMS-staffed recruitment team at ANZ were seamlessly integrated into ANZ internal teams at five locations in Australia. Feedback from internal clients improved considerably over the years, with hiring manager satisfaction rating reaching as high as 8.3 /10.
Transition and Hand-Back
The final hand-back occurred in December 2009, and in a clear indication of the cultural alignment between the organisations, the majority of the existing ANZ Careers team moved in-house with ANZ, ensuring seamless continuity of service.
“Our seamless transition would not have been possible without the strong collaboration and professionalism demonstrated by AMS throughout the project.” Sharon Tan, Global Head of Recruitment, ANZ
